2008 marks the 22nd year that the Kansas City St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee has sponsored the “Go for the Green” food drive to benefit Harvesters, the Community Food Network, Kansas City's only Food Bank.
Since 1986, numerous Elementary, Jr. High, and High Schools as well as a number of grocery stores have participated in this food drive. Their support has helped Harvesters raise thousands of pounds of food to help supply Kansas City 's food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.
In just the last nine years alone, the “Go for the Green” food drive has generated over 250,000 pounds of food! That represents more than 200,000 meals for those in need.
This year, KMBC-9, McGonigle’s Market grocery store, and schools throughout the metropolitan area, have teamed up with Harvesters and the Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, to help make this year’s “Go for the Green” food drive the most successful one yet.
The “Go for the Green” food drive runs from March 1st through the 17th. Look for the “Go for the Green” food drive Barrels at McGonigle’s Market grocery store, and at the Irish Museum at Union Station.
